The Frederick Law Olmsted Papers Staff

The groundbreaking work on the Frederick Law Olmsted Papers Project by its first Editor in Chief, Charles Capen McLaughlin, the scholarly research and public outreach of the present Series Editor, Charles E. Beveridge, and the impetus provided in 1972 by the Olmsted Sesquicentennial celebration assured a solid foundation for the Project.

Editorial work has continued with contributions from David Schuyler, Jane Turner Censer, Victoria Post Ranney, Carolyn F. Hoffman, Tina Hummel, Gerard J. Raulak, Kenneth Hawkins. The work has been aided by the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, and the National Park Service staff at the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Charles Eliot Beveridge

Series Editor
Charles Eliot Beveridge is Series Editor of The Frederick Law Olmsted Papers, published by The Johns Hopkins University Press. To date Volumes 1–7 and Supplementary Series Volume 1 have been published, and work is underway on Volume 8 and Supplementary Series Volume 2. Dr. Beveridge is the author of several publications on Olmsted and his career, including Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing the American Landscape, prepared with photographer Paul Rocheleau.

Ethan Carr

Amherst, MA
Ethan Carr is the Associate Editor of Volume 8 of The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted. He is a landscape historian and preservationist specializing in the public landscapes of the United States. Ethan worked for the Central Park Conservancy and served as the New York City park historian before becoming a National Park Service historical landscape architect. He was an associate professor at the University of Virginia School of Architecture, and is an associate professor of landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he teaches courses in heritage landscape research, management, and interpretation.

Amanda Gagel

Associate Editor, Volume 8
Associate Editor Mandy Gagel earned her PhD from the Editorial Institute at Boston University in 2008, during which time she completed scholarly editions of the poetry of Amy Levy (1861-1889) and the “Selected Letters of Vernon Lee (1856-1935).” Her research interests include the history, culture, and literature of late-nineteenth century America and England. She has previously taught courses on textual scholarship, scholarly editing, and the history of the book.

Michael Shapiro

Assistant Editor, Volume 8
Michael Shapiro holds a MA in History from New York University and a PH.D. in History from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has completed a manuscript and published an article on the history of New York’s Union Square, and co-curated an exhibition on the legacy of Jane Jacobs. Dr. Shapiro teaches courses on a variety of topics related to United States History.

David Schuyler

Principal Editor, Volume 9
David Schuyler is Arthur and Katherine Shadek Professor of the Humanities and Professor of American Studies at Franklin & Marshall College, where he has taught since 1979. A native of Newburgh, NY, Schuyler received the Ph. D. in history from Columbia University, where his dissertation was awarded the Richard B. Morris Prize. David was co-editor of Volumes 2, 3 and 6 of the Olmsted Papers, and is the author of The New Urban Landscape and Apostle of Taste: Andrew Jackson Downing. He is the editor of Volume 9 of the Olmsted Papers, commencing in July 2011.

Gregory Kaliss

Associate Editor, Volume 9
Gregory Kaliss earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008, where he studied with John F. Kasson. He served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of American Studies at Franklin & Marshall College from 2008 to 2011.

Irene Mills

Research Associate and Production Editor, Supplementary Series Volume 2
Irene Mills graduated from Norwich University in Vermont with a BS in Electrical Engineering, and an MSEE from the Air Force Institute of Technology. After retiring from the military, Irene received a MLA from Virginia Tech. Her thesis explored connections between environmental citizenship and the residential landscape. She helped produce the Cultural Landscape Report for the George Washington Parkway vegetation, as part of the National Park Service’s efforts to preserve the character and history of this memorial landscape.

Iris Gestram

Executive Director, NAOP
The National Association for Olmsted Parks (NAOP) serves as the sponsor of The Frederick Law Olmsted Papers Project. Executive Director Iris Gestram, who joined NAOP in 2007, was the Education and Visitor Services Department Head at historic Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA, and Director of Education and Visitor Services at the Olmsted-designed Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, FL, adjacent to Mountain Lake Community with its numerous residential Olmsted Brothers landscapes.
