The Olmsted Center for Landscape
Preservation, a program of the Northeast Region
of the National Park Service, in cooperation
with the National Association for Olmsted
Parks, the Office of the Architect of the
Capitol, and several National Park Service
groups including the National Capitol Region,
the Servicewide Training and Development
Program, and the Park Historic Structures and
Cultural Landscapes Program, is sponsoring a
workshop on maintaining urban historic parks.
Additional support has been provided by The
Davey Tree Expert Company. The three day
workshop, will provide a forum to discuss
current issues and solutions associated with
maintaining our nations significant urban
parks.
The workshops will explore preservation
objectives and operational techniques
associated with maintaining historic urban
parks including:
- sessions on preserving historic
character
- applying new technology to historic
landscape maintenance
- retaining turf in high use areas
- special event planning and recovery
- achieving preservation goals with limited
operational resources
Participants will have the opportunity to
visit key public landscapes during the second
day of the program.
An optional pre-conference site visit to
the George Washington Memorial Parkway, Mount
Vernon, and the Lincoln Memorial is planned for
Monday, November 5. This full-day tour will
provide a behind-the-scenes view into the
landscape management challenges, solutions, and
operations of these significant resources.
The program is designed for field landscape
maintenance staff and mid-level managers
involved in the care and preservation of
historic urban parks and landscapes.

Location
The
location for the workshop is the Smithsonian National
Zoo. The Smithsonian's National
Zoo was founded in 1889. Its mission is to
provide leadership in animal care, science,
education, and sustainability. About 2,000
individuals of 400 different species are in the
animal collection.

Directions
The National Zoo is located at 3001
Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008.
There are several ways to get to the Zoo,
including taking public transportation and
driving. There are pedestrian and vehicle
entrances on Connecticut Avenue, at the west
side of the Zoo. There are two entrances for
pedestrians and vehicles at the east side of
the Zoo, near Rock Creek Park. One is off Rock
Creek Parkway, the other is at the intersection
of Harvard Street and Adams Mill Road. Getting to the Zoo
